British Library Moore, Joseph; 1880. 554 p.; 8 . 10108.e.3.
At the age of eighteen, Aaron Joseph Moore Stovall had begun his
freshman year at Xavier University of Louisiana. He had attended a
few days of classes in college when the natural disaster, hurricane
Katrina hit New Orleans. A few weeks prior to attending college,
Aaron through our church activities participated in a two day
retreat entitled, "An Encounter with God." Although hurricane
Katrina catapulted Aaron into overwhelming events, we believe our
church retreat prepared him spiritually to go through this horrific
catastrophe. Aaron stated, "I owe my life to the Lord " The
experience of living in the dorm after the hurricane hit was worse
than a horrible nightmare. There was no electricity, no water to
take showers or to flush the toilets, and the noxious smell of
sewage and gas was overwhelming. The intense heat and humidity made
him feel as though he was suffocating. Aaron had heard on
television about natural disasters killing people in this nation
and other countries. Now, he was experiencing first hand an ordeal
with one of the worst hurricanes in the history of this country.
his life literally flashed before him. On the sixth day, men in
boats evacuated Aaron and the other students from the dorms and
transported them to a highway overpass. There everything looked
like a scary movie when the world ended and a few people survived.
Aaron was succumbing to despair and feeling hopeless until Reverend
Jesse Jackson drove up in his car and prayed. This unbelievable
experience gave him a different outlook on life. In September of
2005, after two days of being evacuated from New Orleans,
Louisiana, Aaron transferred to Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.
He is very grateful for thekindness and support of the staff and
students at Morehouse College. "We give thanks to the Lord and
proclaim His greatness to the whole world" Psalm 105: 1 (revised)

Seven new Christmas tales for grownups. Short stories of adults who
due to cynicism, commercialism and isolationism find themselves
detached from the Spirit of Christmas. They've got the 'Holiday
Blues.' Have they been expecting too much from the Christmas
Holidays, or too little? And what does it take to reconnect with
the spirit of the season, and discover its true meaning? It can
happen in response to a simple heartfelt gesture. Sometimes it
takes being forced firmly but kindly out of our comfort zone.
Occasionally it requires the intercession of non-worldly guides.
Join the characters of Christmas Wishes as they shrug off the
darkness that envelopes those who have, for a variety of reasons,
armored themselves against the true Spirit of Christmas, and share
their joy when they are once again bathed in its light. Holiday
traditions. The simple message will brighten your soul, and share
its joy, not just in the Yuletide, but all the months of the year.
With seven new photographs by Jesmoe Q. Feesh.
Aware of Mr. Doby's neglect by biographers, Mr. Moore, who has
been a fan of his subject ever since he heard the Doby legend,
seeks to give him recognition. . . . Mr. Moore effectively uses
records, interviews, and a clear narrative style to make his points
(what is more persuasive in sports than an athlete's record what is
more animated than public statements and their refutations ), and
gives voice to some of Mr. Doby's severest critics.... "Pride
Against Prejudice" is a tribute to both its author and Larry
Doby
"New York Times Book RevieW"
This is an excellent biography of Larry Doby, the first black
player in the American League and one of the first black managers
in the major leagues. . . . Moore has done a superb job of
researching Doby's life and writing about it. The book is highly
recommended. "The Sporting NewS"
As the second black major league baseball player, following
Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby has never received the acclaim accorded
to Robinson; yet his experiences of segregation and racial
invective, and his courage and ability to excel in the face of
almost overwhelming circumstances, were equivalent. This
fascinating biography brings to light many interesting and
little-known facts concerning Doby's life and baseball career, and
his contribution as a civil rights pioneer in the American League.
His story is perceived as the story of the many black men who
followed him into major league baseball, and who shared importantly
in pioneering the integration of the sport.
